BGC WEEK RECAP
(JUNE 21ST- JUNE 25TH)
Around the nation, Boys & Girls Clubs (BGC) celebrated this past year’s accomplishments, resilience, innovation, and ability to provide safe places for kids and teens. June 21st- June 25th was a celebratory moment for all of us, and a time to reflect on all we did to make sure our members had academic support, workforce readiness, and health & wellness programs to keep them moving forward.
The celebration had a simple theme—Whatever It Takes to Build Great Futures! Locally, Clubs provided activities and events that would engage cadets (ages 6-12), teens (ages 13-18), and the community.
The Harris Farms Club, located in Huron invited Buffalo Wild Wings and Chevron—longtime supporters of the Club—to visit with them and join the fun. Activities included STEM projects, dancing, and carnival foods.
In Reedley, members “Blasted into the Summer” with an outer space themed week. Activities included art projects, and journaling about their favorite thing to do at the Club.
In East Fresno, members channeled their inner superhero for a comic book themed week. Waterslides kept the members physically active and healthy smoothie recipes taught them the importance of including fruits and vegetables in their diet.
In Mendota, members learned a life lesson with this theme: “After Rain Comes Rainbows.” Each day had a color associated with an activity. Monday’s red theme came with a watermelon eating contest! Thursday’s green theme came with a green slime science project. Needless to say, Friday was rainbow day and they all admired the rainbows that were created with sprinklers and water balloons at their local park.
Every Club had something for teens in the late afternoon as well. In Del Rey teens participated with Taco Tuesday. These are just a few events that engaged youth in our community during BGC Week. We are grateful for donors and community partners that participated, provided snacks, and gave monetary donations to help make this a great week! BGC Week was a perfect way to kick off the summer and let our members know that the pandemic might have been difficult, but a safe place is always open for them.
