Total Teen Takeover

Our annual Central Valley Teen Conference was a huge success thanks to our event sponsors, our staff, the event committee, and the 150 teens that attended. Club member’s age 13-18 from all 14 Clubhouses were invited to participate in a day-long teen conference called “Total Teen Takeover”. Along with general sessions and guest speakers, teens also registered for workshops about college, workforce readiness, conflict resolution, overcoming adversity and more.

“Our workshops are purposeful. We ask community partners to come in advance and remind them that they are speaking to teens—young adults who are experiencing the hardest time of their life but can have the greatest hope for their future,” said Richard Saldivar, Director of Operations and Event Committee Chair.

Mike Barraza, Club Alum and current U.S. Marine was the keynote speaker. He shared his experience as a trouble making teen who was “set straight” at the Club. He also shared the fun experience he had participating in Youth of the Year and encouraged them all to start thinking about how to better their life now through the programs the Club offers. He was our 2012 Youth of the Year and we were happy to have him back.

Other activities at the conference included; a resource fair, a financial literacy activity by Bank of America, music by Q97 Radio, food, a life-size game of foosball, a basketball tournament and a VR Truck.

The goal was to bring teens together for a day of fun while giving them the resources they need for their future.  That could mean a scholarship application, one-on-one time with a professional, or encouragement to follow their dreams.

“Our teens are our future and giving them the opportunity to come together for a day of learning, empowerment, inspiration, and education will only equip them with the confidence to plan for their future, establish goals, and make meaningful connections with community-based organizations and educational institutions,” said Saldivar.

Special thanks to The George & Desa Belyea Charitable Trust who funded the event and all of our community partners for participating in the resource fair and workshops.
