Youth of the Year: Northern California Competition
Our 2023 Youth of the Year, Raymond Gonzalez competed in the Northern California Youth of the Year Competition on March 9th. The experience of competing meant a lot to him even though he was not chosen to move forward in the competition.
“I acknowledge the fact that I made it this far. It meant a lot to hear the judges say I did a great job. They were impressed with my academics and my speech. I happened to lose the Northern California Competition but it felt great to tell my story. My story is about change. Ironically, the Youth of the Year Competition really changed me as well,” said Raymond.
In January, Raymond competed locally and earned his title of Fresno County’s Youth of the Year. His speech brought most to tears. His enthusiasm for a great future was evident and the description of his Club experience was inspiring. Upon winning, youth are given a choice to compete in the next level. We are glad Raymond chose to share his Club experience in the Northern California Competition. He will always have the support of the Boys & Girls Clubs.
“Raymond has a whole team from the Harris Farms Club, all the way to Fresno, who are here to support him every step of the way as he continues onto his path for college and the work force. Currently, Raymond visits his Club weekly allowing him to volunteer his time, hang out with friends, seek mentorship, as well as mentor younger members himself. As opportunities roll-in, we all make sure that he is included,” said Director of Operations, Maria Garcia.
Maria and Unit Director, Gustavo Gonzalez accompanied Raymond to Santa Clara for the competition, along with Raymond’s older brother. He explained that when Gustavo ironed his clothes for the big day, and Maria organized exciting activities for them to do, he realized that the Boys & Girls Club had taught him how to become an adult. Their kindness and support even made an impact on Raymond’s older brother. “A ripple effect” is how Raymond described the impact Clubs make on people.
Raymond had never travelled outside of the Central Valley before.
“We decided to explore the area and ate at a new restaurant. It was an amazing trip. I even played golf for the first time!” he said.
“One thing I admire about Raymond, is that he is very confident and has a huge sense of pride about who he is and where he comes from. When he found out he didn’t make it to the next round, he remained humble and excited for the all the other opportunities he knows he’ll participate in this year as the Youth of the Year for Fresno County,” said Maria.
Raymond is a senior at Coalinga High School, expected to graduate in June. He likes web developing, computer coding, and chess. He also participates in Track & Cross County at his school. As of today, he has been accepted to five universities, including Cal Poly- San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara.
